Star Square is a square of fabric based on a parallelogram damask pattern that is mirrored right-left and top-bottom. It can be a scarf, a wrapping cloth, a lap blanket, or baby blanket. It is somewhat impractical as a scarf, because you really only need half of it…but it is a beautiful object and a joy to make. Star Square would be nice to have on a journey where you might need a lap blanket, or you might need a neck warmer.

Cast on and knit the bottom of Star Square with a marker in the middle to divide the right and left sides. Within each half, the pattern has simple repeats. Then you switch to the top half and work to complete the square. It’s an easy piece to work, all in knits and purls.

Star Square is worked in Ito Kinu held with Ito Sensai. The combined weight of the two yarns together is sport: you need two cones of Kinu and four balls of Sensai. Choose close colors so the fabric appears as a solid to accentuate the stitch pattern.
