Star Snowflake
I am delighted to announce that this pattern has been freshly updated and has now been tech edited as well!
This pattern is also the featured pattern for the 2023 Snowflake Workshop; find out more here.
My mother used to make all of our Christmas ornaments; my favorites were the snowflakes. I’ve tried my hand at thread crochet with varying success, but I finally decided that the snowflake designs I kept trying were just too piddly, so I set out to make my own.
With this snowflake, there are no slip stitches worked into the chain, PLUS you can modify the final design during the blocking and stiffening process. Simple chains are twisted to create the length and points of the arms, which pulls the crocheting together without having to work stitches into the chain. It also adds a textural element to compliment the star in the center.
STITCHES & TECHNIQUES:
- Adjustable Ring
- Single Crochet
- Front Post Single Crochet
- Front Post Treble Crochet
- Picot
- Some experience with thread crochet recommended.
GAUGE:
Gauge is not terribly important for this project so use a hook that you are comfortable working with your chosen thread. One of the advantages of this snowflake is that it doesn’t need to have painfully tight stitches to look great!
SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Finished sizes ranging from 3.5 - 7” (9-18 cm) across, depending on thread, tension, and crochet hook used.
SUGGESTED MATERIALS:
- Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread in size 3, 5, or 10
- C/2 (2.75 mm) crochet hook for size 3 or 5 thread; 1.65mm crochet hook for size 10 thread
- stitch marker(s)
- scissors
- small darning needle
- fabric stiffener or draping liquid, undiluted
- absorbent cloth
- blocking surface
- rust resistant pins
- small paint brush
- stiff bristled brush
