For a confluence of the traditional and modern in this lacy shawl, Galina Khmeleva used a traditional Orenburg diagonal element to form the star motifs in the center, but she tapered the cast-on and bind-off edges into points to instill a more modern look to the classic rectangular palatine shape. She also substituted kid mohair in a rich burgundy for the more traditional natural white. Knitted against a garter-stitch foundation—no purling!—this shawl features a sawtooth edging that is worked simultaneously with the body. A simple slipped stitch borders each edge.
