Square Dance
UNSQUARE DANCE is a musical composition.
Square Dance is a shawl and is named in respect of the masterful Dave Brubeck (an American jazz pianist and composer, considered to be one of the foremost exponents of progressive jazz) - 6.14.1920 - 5.14.2014.
Jazz music has been in Belinda’s life, pretty much, all her life. She has memories of singing along to Ella Fitzgerald, the phenomenal jazz vocalist, when she was 3 or 4.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF SQUARE DANCE:
Begin at the centre back, casting on 2sts and ‘growing the pattern’ by repeating a sequence of stitches. The shawl develops by adding an extra ‘square’ each section (over 10rows), each row adds another 20sts. You are on your way home when you arrive at the ‘v’ corner pattern.
The border edge (created while casting-off) works beautifully; each square motif sits comfortably within the main body of squares. This shawl is knitted in the most beautiful mix of alpaca, silk and cashmere; a glorious softer-than-softer yarn that is just a joy to hold and swathe yourself in. Enjoy!
