The idea for the Spiralling Star Fingerless Mittens came from an online knit-along which challenged participants to create something using the Star Stitch pattern. While swatching, I found a particular version of the Star Stitch that created a spiral effect, and these mittens were born from that!

These fingerless mittens are worked from the cuff-up in the round, with the Star Stitch pattern continuing onto the thumb gusset. The top cuff, bottom cuff, and thumb are edged with 1 by 1 ribbing. The yarn used for the sample is MadelineTosh Eyre Light, shown in the colourway “Mill Pond”, but any fingering-weight yarn should work up fine. If substituting yarns, be aware that the yarn chosen should be a yarn with a considerable amount of stretch. Please note that these these mittens are designed to be worn with no positive ease, and that the stitch pattern does not have a lot of stretch. They are specifically designed to be quite snug to the hand, especially around the thumb gusset. For best results, knit the size that is closest to or larger than your actual hand measurements. If in doubt, go up a size.

Pattern Notes:

This pattern has written instructions, and the stitch pattern is both written and charted. This pattern also has an accessible large print option that is compatible with screen-reading software. This option includes only the written instruction.

The large print option is done in a sans-serif font with a minimum 24 pt font size, and all pictures included have alt-text enabled for screen-readers.

Please note that gauge is important for this pattern, given the snug fit of these mitts. Please check your gauge against a washed and blocked swatch to ensure the mittens are not too small.
