This shawl is so much fun to work, you won’t want to put it down! It starts with a simple lace in one color, then a second color in an eyelet stitch is added in and those are worked side by side. You can continue like this until one of the colors of your yarn is used up, then finish with a band of the third color. The pattern includes options that let you use every last bit of your yarn, as well as checklists so you can easily keep track of repeats and stitch counts.
Yarn selection: This calls for 100g (around 425 yards/ 390 meters) of the main color, 75g of the first accent color, and 50g of the second accent color. The yarns for the sample are from Knitcircus Yarns in their Trampoline base: The gradient is “Under the Sea” and the accent colors are “Crowd Surfing” and “Plenty of Fish.” They will have kits with other color combinations as well.
This pattern works wonderfully with a speckled, gradient, or variegated yarn as the main color and coordinating tonals for the contrast colors, but due to the simple nature of the stitch patterns it is a very flexible pattern and will work with many color combinations. If you’re working from stash and trying to decide on colors, email me! I would love to consult with you.
Finished dimensions: The edges of the shawl are approximately 72 x 64 x 48”/ 180 x 160 x 120 cm with the drop approximately 22”/ 55 cm deep. Measurements were taken after light blocking.
Skills to have (or enjoy learning) for this pattern: k2tog, p2tog, yarn over, slipped stitches. This pattern is straighforward, with very simple repeats that are easy to learn and memorize.
Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows = 4”/ 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Gauge is not terribly important, but if your gauge differs, it will affect your finished dimensions and yarn usage.
Needles: US 9/ 5.5 mm needle or size needed to achieve gauge. This shawl can be completed using 14” straight needles, but a 40”/ 100 cm or longer circular needle might be more comfortable.
Thank you to the test knitters who helped find any errors and ensure that this pattern is clearly written.
