’Something to Declare’ evokes the customs declaration areas of major ports and airports.

These luggage labels were inspired by the vintage leather address labels I used when I first started travelling overseas many years ago. Fun accessories they can be used on handbags or nappy bags and you don’t have to stick to names and addresses but could use them to contain favourite quotes or positive affirmations. You could also use them on your knitting bag for knitting reminder notes.

The luggage tag is knitted from the button flap to the shaped tip, starting flat, then joining in the round, then casting off and knitting flat again before finally joining in the round again for the shaped end. The ends are Kitchener stitched together but you can cast off and sew up the end if you prefer.

This pattern was originally released during the Winter Olympics in Sochi as a declaration of support for those oppressed as a result of their sexual orientation, both in Russia as the host country but also around the world in participating and non-participating nations.

Something to Declare was offered for free for the duration of the Winter Olympics and I encouraged users to declare their support by considering a small donation to charities that provide support and raise awareness of LGBT issues. I listed a few here in the UK, but suggested users could choose an organisation closer to home:

Stonewall
LGBT Youth Scotland
The Equality Network
The Proud Trust
The LGBT Consortium has a directory to help you find organisation near you.

Following the Olympics, Something to Declare is now a paid for pattern and proceeds will be donated to The Proud Trust, formerly LGBT Youth Northwest, linked above.

The pattern provides the basic pattern and variations for rainbow stripes, charts for motifs and instructions to combine the 2. There’s also a blank chart for you to design your own motif.

This pattern will be available for free download from Ravelry for the duration of the Games.

I used about 7g of yarn per label.
