Something Different No-Purl Socks
A toe-up, no-swatch, any-gauge, knit-to-fit design. Try something new!
Many, many photos to walk you through new techniques. Even a link to a video I recorded to support the pattern if you learn best that way.
This would be a perfect project for firm handspun yarn with mohair or silk in it for strength.
- Circular cast on at toe
- Historical Turkish/Eastern Thumb-Joint afterthought heel
- No-purl smooth stockinette fabric
- Garter-made-with-a-Twist for no-roll cuff edging
Construction: Toe up on 5 double-pointed needles (4 holding, 1 working); begun with circular cast on. Subtle swirl shaping on toe and heel. Replaceable heel.
Needle Size: At least one size smaller than the ball band of your yarn specifies, especially when using sweater yarns. Dense fabric wears longer.
Yarn/Needle size guidelines:
- 4-6 US/ 3.5—4mm for Aran-weight yarn
- 3 to 5 US (3.25—3.75mm) for worsted
- 2‑1/2 to 4 US (3—3.5mm) for DK weight
- 1 to 2-1/2 US (2.25—3mm)for sport weight
- 0 to 1-1/2 (2—2.5mm)for fingering/sockweight;
I knit tightly, so you might choose a size smaller yet.
Adjust if you don’t have a comfortable yet dense fabric.
Yarn types: Wool or wool-blend, or other warm yarn in DK, Worsted or Aran weight (ball band will specify 5.5 to 4.5 st/inch). 100gm is plenty up to Ladies’ Large. Larger sizes and thicker yarn take more yarn by weight. Wool blended with nylon, silk or mohair tends to wear longest.
Extras: Large-eyed needle with sharp point. One yard of smooth, contrasting yarn in same weight.
Note: Early text here mis-identified the name of the afterthought heel in the pattern.
