This is the easiest of easy garter shawls, requires no special cast on, and can be knitted in any sock yarn, even stripey leftovers. It is a perfect TV knit too, requiring minimal concentration for maximum output. The edge is stretchy but plain. No special techniques are required.
You can use any standard sock yarn. The sample shown is knit in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature Sock, colourway 844 Kingfisher. I used 1 x 100 g / 3 ½ oz ball, which gave me a shawl large enough for a scarf wrap (see photo on a size 12 (UK) model; you could use alternating stripes of scrap yarn, or use two 100 g balls to give a larger shawl.
