I grew up wearing this shape of Ski Hat - they’re called ‘IKA BO’ (’squid hat’) in Japanese because of their shape :)

The bottom of the hat is doubled, so it’s very warm and secure on your head. Since I’m sensitive to wearing wool directly on my skin, I used 100% cotton yarn for the CO and first 15 rounds.

The color work is done with stranded color work. You use only 2 colors in each round.
The sample is knitted with 5 different colors total. This hat also can be knitted with just 2 or 3 colors. Please see below for the design note.

2 different sizes are made with 2 different gauges. Please take time to check your gauge for the correct hat size.

YARN
The sample is knitted with mainly Malabrigo “Arroyo” sport weight yarn. Any Sport or DK yarn work for this project.

Color A (White) - 85 (90) yards
Color B (Blue) - 90 (95) yards

Color C (Light blue) - 10 (12) yards
Color D (Orange) - 7 (8) yards
Color E (Pink) - 7 (8) yards

NEEDLE
Recommended needle size - US 4~5

GAUGE
M size - 24 sts / 4”
L size - 23 sts / 4”
A slightly tighter gauge is better for this project. You may need to use smaller needle size than recommended on the yarn to get the correct gauge.

DESIGN NOTE
* If you would like to knit this hat with 2 colors: Color A and B.
First Color C section → Color B.
Second Color C section → Color A.
Color D → Color B.
Color E → Color A.
* With 3 colors: Color A, B and C.
Color D → Color B.
Color E → Color A.
