Many lace patterns are inspired by nature and this one is no exception. The panels of small sprigs fan out from an imagined stem and each are topped by a bud, soon to become a flower.

The inspiration for this design came from a shawl I purchased in Estonia. The original had sprigs of openwork fern-like leaves, separated as these are, by bands of reverse stockinette stitch. I chose to shorten the ‘sprigs’ and add a ‘nupp’ (bud or button in Estonia) at the tip of each one, to give interest to the pattern. The original shawl also had a scalloped edging surrounding the center, that was attached in the traditional Estonian way, by sewing. I chose to place a decorative scalloped edge at the top and bottom of the shawl, leaving the sides with a garter stitch edge. The shawl is worked up from the bottom, cast on edge and top edge is attached by Kitchener stitch.
