One Size: 102 cm / 40” wingspan, 80 cm / 32” depth from centre back to point

Yarn A: Viola Polwarth + Alpaca (4 ply / Fingering weight; 70% Polwarth, 15% Brown Alpaca, 15% White Alpaca; 500 m / 547 yds per 100 g skein)
Shade: Silver Birch; 3 skeins

Yarn B: Viola Mohair Lace (lace weight; 72% Mohair, 28% Silk; 420 m / 459 yds per 50 g skein)
Shades:
MC: Cygnet; 3 skeins

CC 1-7: Ghost, Dew Drop, Bronte, Frozen Earth, Down to the Wire, Evergreen, Giant Peach; approx. 10 g each.

Note: Borders take approx. 25 g of yarn B. If you plan to stripe borders as well, more of yarn B will be required.

Note on Yarn B CC: Only tiny amounts of each colour are used so this is a great opportunity to use up any little bits of leftover yarn in your own stash. A fluffy mohair blends in well, but choose contrasting stripes in colours that work well together, and you will enjoy wearing. This shawl is about using what you have, not having to hunt down 7 matching colours. I’d recommend a few colour swatches, and taking the time to experiment with colour combinations and placement before casting on. It’s an opportunity to dig out some treasures from your stash!

Gauge: 18 sts & 38 rows = 10 cm / 4” over Brioche Garter stitch on 4 mm needles / US 6 needles , with 1 strand each of yarns A and B held together, after blocking
15 sts & 42 rows = 10 cm / 4” over Garter stitch on 4.5 mm / US 7 needles after blocking (border requires some stretching during blocking)

Needles: 4 mm / US 6 circular needle, 100 cm / 40” length
4.5 mm / US 7 circular needle, 80-100 cm / 32-40” length for borders

Note: Although the shawl is worked flat, a circular needle is recommended due to the large number of sts.
Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Notions: 2 stitch markers, tapestry needle

Notes: Snowdrift Shawl is an ‘almost triangular’ shawl. It is cast on at the lower tip and yarnover increases are worked at the beginning and end of RS rows until the shawl reaches its widest point. Brioche lines run vertically up and down the shawl body, and repeats are incorporated into the body as increases are worked. Stitches for the border are picked up in the yarnover increases of the shawl body. Short rows are used to shape the borders, and border stitches are knit on a larger needle to prevent the shawl body from puckering.
The body is knit holding one strand of yarn A and one strand of yarn B MC together throughout. Contrasting stripes are knit in yarn B CC, and make up a third strand in areas where they are used. The pictured shawl uses seven contrasting yarn B colours at random to create the stripe pattern. The border is knit with one strand of yarn A and one strand of yarn B CC held double. Stripes of yarn B CC can also be worked at the border if preferred.
