These mittens are inspired by choppers, a leather mitten with a knit liner, that I used to wear shoveling the cold winters away in Minnesota. This wool version was designed at a tight gauge to keep out the freezing wind, with a faux-liner cuff to prevent the snow from falling into the mitten. The mittens are knit in garter stitch in the round (knitting one round, purling one round) from the bottom-up (shown). They could also be knit flat from side to side for those who don’t mind a little seaming, but hate purling. I’ve designed them in beautiful 100% wool, but don’t hesitate to use a hard-wearing and washable yarn with synthetic content especially for the little ones. These mittens will keep your hands warm through the long winters spent in the snow, sledding, building snowmen with the kids, or searching for the perfect Christmas tree.

They have been designed in seven standard sizes, but the pattern includes measurements of the hand widths for each, and lengths to help you custom fit the your mittens specifically to your hands.

All gauge swatches have been knit flat.

Pattern calls for 9” circular or double-pointed needles in sizes US3 (3.25mm) and US9 (5.5mm) as well as a set of US9 (5.5mm) dpns for the thumb if you chose a 9” circular for the body of the mitten.

All of the sizes use only one skein of Quarry or Loft for a pair, and often, two pairs of mittens can be knit using one skein of Quarry (many cuffs out of the Loft).
