Gauge is not really important with this pattern. And using a different size needle is not a problem. I made 10 repeats of the pattern for this child size scarf pictured. You can add as many repeats as needed for desired length.

Also, this can be adapted to colored sections for a totally different look and a great way to use up left over scraps of yarn.
