This Snakes and Ladders set is designed for the garden. It is made from DK using a traditional granny square for the board. It only has 36 squares as it is aimed at smaller children but you can make it any size you want to.

The playing pieces are all made with UK-dc (US-sc). I have used cds in the bases to give them a bit of stability.

I don’t see the point in making toys for children which can’t be washed so I use machine washable acrylic DK. This means that you don’t have to worry about them getting dirty because you can just throw them in the washing machine. It also comes in a variety of cheerful colours.

Materials: Acrylic DK yarn (100g balls), (4 Red, 4 Yellow, 4 Blue, 1 Green, 1 Variegated, 1 White and 1 Black) Polyester filling.

Equipment: 4.00mm hook for the board, 3.00mm hook for the playing pieces, 4 old cds (or 8 and stick 2 together for a firmer base), Needle for sewing in ends.

Tension (UK) terms): The first 11 rows of the base should be the same size as the cd. The first 8 rows of the squares for the board measure about 19 cm (7½ inches).
