Do you love to buy self-striping yarns but are tired of using them for plain vanilla socks? Continuing to explore the theme I started with my Exotic Whirlpool socks (pattern is free at Ravelry.com), Smokey Zickzacks are anything but plain.
Worked side to side in garter stitch, increases and decreases form chevrons that are strategically placed to produce the traditional knitted-in-the-round sock shape. Ending with a row of grafting that mimics the chevron pattern, this sock construction requires a leap of faith. The rows contain a relatively large number of stitches that create different stripe sequences than would otherwise appear with hand-dyed yarns.

Finished size:

• 5 1/4 (6 1/4, 7 3/4, 8 3/4)“ (13.5 16, 19.5, 22 cm) sock circumference, will stretch to fit up to 6 1/2 (7 7/8, 9 1/4 8 3/4)” (16.5 20, 23.5, 26.5 cm) foot circumference
• 5 3/4 (6 3/4, 7 7/8, 8 7/8)“ (14.5 17, 20, 22.5 cm) sock length from back of heel to tip of toe, will stretch to fit up to 7 1/2 (9, 10 1/2, 11 3/4)” (19 23, 26.5, 30 cm) foot length
• 6 1/8 (7 1/4, 8 1/4, 9 1/2)“ (15.5 18.5, 21, 24 cm) leg length from top of cuff to base of heel
