Small Things Bonnet
When our children were born we counted their toes and their fingers. We marveled at their tiny tummies and took note of their birthmarks. We noticed where they were “normal” and where they were “different”, and we treasured them all the same because they were ours and perfect in our eyes. We dressed them in soft cloth, and we snuggled for hours (and hours and hours). In our minds we hold snapshots of these moments untouched by the present no matter how long ago our children were new: the eye gazing, the sleep smiles, the middle-of-the-nights alone together. It’s the small things we
remember, the small things we keep forever in our treasure chests, and it’s these same small things we hope to have the chance to pass on to our children when their children are new.
Small Things is a timeless bonnet design with a clever self-border edge and slipped stitch detailing. Pattern includes 4 sizes to fit a range of babies and children ( and even the spritely adult now and then), and 2 crown styles: a rounded bonnet or a pixie hood. Instructions are given for a button closure or i-cord ties. This comprehensive pattern is appropriate for intermediate knitters or the advanced beginner wanting to stretch a little.
Sizes
Directions are written for Newborn with changes for larger sizes in parentheses as follows: Infant (Toddler, Child, Adult) to fit a head circumference of 13-14 (15-16, 17-18, 19-20)”
Finished Measurements
Height: 6¼ (7, 7¾, 8½)”
Depth: 5 (6, 7, 8)”
Materials
Yarn: Yardages listed are generous estimates. It’s always better to err on the side of too much yarn rather than too little. When in doubt, buy the extra skein for insurance. In worsted to aran weight yarn you will need approximately 85 (100, 120, 145) yards or 75 (90, 110, 130) meters for the Pixie Style Hood and approximately 70 (85, 100, 120) or 65 (75, 90, 110) meters for the Rounded Bonnet Style.
Needles: 2 double pointed needles and circular in US sizes 8 (5mm) or size required to obtain gauge. Hat is knit flat, so if you’re using circular needles length is not critical, but no shorter than 16” for comfort’s sake.
Notions: 6 stitch markers (for Rounded Bonnet Style only), darning needle for weaving in ends, and 1 button about 3/4” - 1” in diameter (optional for Button Tab closure).
