The Slideways Hat is a double-knitted hat, made with two different colours of squishy DK-weight yarn, creating a hat that is not only as warm and cosy as you could ever need, but as it is double-knitting, you get to turn it inside out, and wear your hat with the colours reversed.

Unlike the majority of double-knitting patterns available, where all the stitches in the finished object stack up on top of each other in orderly rows and columns, like the squares on the charts you knit them from, the Slideways Hat pattern takes advantage of what is sometimes called “off-the-grid” design, where the clever use of judiciously placed increases and decreases actually skews the columns of stitches this way and that, creating texture and patterns that can’t be achieved under ordinary circumstances.

This particular design is one of the simplest examples of this kind of DK, and even the most complex rows in the pattern contain no more than one increase, and one decrease, making this a surprisingly easy knit, considering how bold and effective the pattern is.
