Sleeping Trees
A Classic Brown & Blue Fair Isle Hat
In winter in the Northeast, all the hardwood trees are bare. Not dead, just sleeping, waiting to make a glorious comeback in the spring. This is a “tip of the hat” to one of my favorites, an ornamental pear tree that is often seen in the background of my hat photos. Corrugated rib at the brim, a classic border topped off with winter’s sleeping trees. All in a classic combination of brown and blues. Something so soothing about these colors. Enjoy.
Because there are very few long “carries” or “floats” this pattern is a good “first” colorwork project. There are never more than 2 colors in a round and only 2 or 3 rounds with carries longer than 4 stitches.
When carrying yarns on the back, do NOT carry too tightly! Better too loose than too tight or hat will lose its stretch. YouTube has a wealth of videos showing how to carry yarn on back of work. Look for them if you are new to color work. Just search “stranded knitting” and find a video that works for you.

Materials for Child, (Adult, Large Adult):
Cascade 220 Dark Chocolate #9557 110 (120, 140) yds
Cascade 220 Duck Egg Blue #9427 50, (60, 75) yds CC1
Cascade 220 Mint #9076 30, (40, 50) yds CC2
US Size 7 - 24 inch circular needles & same size DP’s (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Seam needle
Crochet Hook size G for optional fairy pull.
Stitch marker

Gauge: 20 sts x 24 rows = 4 ins in stranded stockinette stitch.
Finished Length: approximately 7.5 (8, 8.5) ins.
Finished Circumference: (approximately) Child: 19, (Adult: 21, Large Adult: 23) ins
