“Knitting and crochet are so often separate but here they work as a team to create something special. Like the horizon meeting the sky, the two crafts both contrast and blend, creating a feeling of expansiveness, that sense of possibility you feel when you are present in an open place and feel the sky around you.”
Quote from Pompom Magazine No. 46
The SKIES cardigan is a cardigan version to the Prairie Skies sweater pattern, which was originally published in Pompom Magazine No. 46, Autumn 2023. It’s the perfect layering piece for spring and summer. It features a cropped body and sleeves in ¾ length.
The cardigan is worked top-down, starting with crochet granny squares which are sewn together into a V-shaped yoke. Stitches along the lower yoke edge are picked up, one side (wearer’s left and right) at a time and short rows are worked to equalize the slant of the V-shaped yoke at front and back. Right and left sides are joined to finish the body in stockinette stitch in the round, front bands and hem are worked in 1x1 rib and for a professional finishing touch, you bind off using the tubular method.
Sleeve stitches are placed on hold during the short rows and later returned to the needles and worked in the round, ending with a 1x1 rib cuff and bound off using I-cord bind-off.
SIZES
1 (2 / 3) (4 / 5 / 6) (7 / 8 / 9)
Fullest point circumference (garment): 96 (105 / 116) (123 / 134.5 / 142) (151.5 / 161 / 173.5) cm 37.75 (41.25 / 45.75) (48.5 / 53 / 56) (59.75 / 63.5 / 68.25) inches, to be worn with 10–20 cm / 4–8 inches of positive ease
Please note that the bust circumference measured on the garment is a bit smaller (estimated 5–10% less) than the given fullest point circumference. Due to the construction, it’s difficult to say exactly what the bust measurement is. Please choose a size with at least 10 cm (4 inches) of positive ease (or more) to ensure a good fit.
The person in the photo is 156 cm (5 feet 1 inch) tall with a bust circumference of 86 cm (33.75 inches), wearing a size 2 with 19 cm (7.75 inches) of positive ease and a side length of 30 cm (11.75 inches).
