Ski Sunday is the name of the BBC tv Sunday afternoon / early evening skiing programme with a fabulous theme tune, we thought it was merely a fond memory of our childhoods but no, it’s still on! OUR Ski Sunday is a snug and warm sweater inspired by vintage 60s / 70s pictures of skiers with some lovely diamond and triangle patterning, although as you can see, Ski Sunday is at home on a rooftop in super-urban Soho as it is on the slopes of, oooh, Gstaad.

You could, at a pinch, work this as an intarsia sweater but it’s easier to work it as ‘fairisle’ and strand the yarn not being used across the back of the work. Instructions given are for knitting flat and seaming - we think this gives more structure and is best suited to the shape of the sweater. As you can see from the measurements below we suggest it as being worn with positive ease. As ever (and as with all of our sweater patterns) Ski Sunday comes with comprehensive spec drawings and measurements of both body and sleeves to make choosing your size / fit alterations as easy as possible.

We’ve used our perennial favourite, John Arbon’s Knit by Numbers to knit it with as the colour range is just stunning and the yarn itself is beautiful. It’s especially good for colourwork like this as unlike a lot of slick, bouncy, merinos it fluffs up and gets a little bit sticky if you steam it when you’ve knitted, helping to smooth out any irregularities in your tension and bonding stitches together ever-so-slightly in a perfect way.

As with all colourwork (and because the yarn comes in 100g hanks) you’ll have leftovers from these amounts. We have plenty of hat patterns (The Titfer comes to mind) to help you use these up!

Needles: 3.25mm, 3.75mm and 4mm.

Tension: 24 sts and 28 rows to 10cm over pattern (worked as stranded knitting) on 4mm nds AFTER a light steam (if using the Knit By Numbers yarn it will shrink up a little when lightly steamed, this is why row counts are given within the pattern rather than length measurements).

The sleeves are a generous length here to allow for turning back the cuffs / keeping wintery draughts out, so if you feel you would like yours shorter then please check the measurement given on the spec and alter the amount of rows worked to the armhole taking the rows out from the bottom of the chart to keep the patterns matching.
