The Needs:

• US 5 (3.75) 16” circular needles. US 6 (4mm) 16” circular and magic looping circular/DPNs for the decreases.
• A stitch marker and a darning needle.
• 3 50g cakes of fingering or sock weight yarn. Original sample in Legacy Fiber Arts Cozy Toes “Grey Gardens”, La Bien Amie singles “Kingston”, and Woolfolk Sno “1 + 11”.
• Gauge: 20 stitches and 23 rows in 4” of twisted rib. 16 stitches and 23 rows in 4” of body of hat pattern.
• Sizing: Adult Small ( Medium , Large ) ; 7” ( 8” , 9” ) width and 6 3/4” ( 7 1/2” , 9” ) length)

Stitches/Techniques Used:

Knit, Purl, Knit through the back loop, Knit two stitches together. Marling three strands of yarn together.

The Backstory:

Jeff Sjoval was my neighbor growing up as a kid in Colchester, CT. Some of my favorite summer memories were camping the back yard and playing sports with him. I know, me, sports. That was something!

His mom also took us camping once to a hippie camp when we were in high school. I was offered a Red Bull at one point, and thinking it was alcohol, I hilariously declined. I think that says quite a bit about me…

Anyways, I had some scrap yarn and Jeff said he wanted a hat, so the Sjoval hat was born!

Knit with one of my favorite new weights, “TK” (Triple Knit), which is holding three strands together to get a super marled, aran-ish weight knit. Color wise, I used a tonal medium gray, a tonal light grey with teal speckles, and a blue and white marled skein to get the overall blue-gray look.

Thankfully, Jeff loved the hat and was even kind enough to take pictures of himself in it while on vacation in Florida. Thanks neighbor!
