Sirenia
She sells seashells by the seashore. I remember the first time I’ve heard this tongue twister, I was wondering who the ‘she’ could be. The only logical option at the time seemed to be a mermaid. After all, she lives in the sea and has access to the most beautiful seashells.
When I saw this ‘She Sells Seashells’ yarn, I was reminded of my mermaid idea and this inspired me to design a shawl based on this theme. Sirenia is worked in one piece starting with the lace border along the bottom edge; it is shaped into a crescent with easy stockinette short rows (no wraps).
The lace pattern along the bottom edge of the shawl looks like tiny mermaid tails, which fits perfectly with the inspiration. To mimic the frothy ocean waves breaking along the shore, I added some simple wavy lace stitches along with a few yarn overs reminiscent of bubbles sparkling on the water.
The Sirenia pattern is now available as Ravelry download.
This pattern was originally published as part of the Embrace the Lace Knitting Club from Woolgirl in August 2013.
May 22, 2014 pattern update - Row 7 of the written instructions only has been corrected; there are no yarn overs in this row (the chart remains unchanged).
New in this update - optional beading scheme is included on page 4 of this pdf.
