Simply Circles Cape
This circular cape was designed to go with the Simply Circles Skater Skirt. They are both delightfully swishy to wear. The cape stays in place in your shoulders and hangs down in soft folds. There is enough fabric that you can probably also throw the end over your shoulder and pin it in place. It can be fastened with buttons or some other type of clip fastening.
The cape and Simply Circles Skater Skirt, together with Simply Circles Hat, formed an outfit that was originally designed, and short-listed, for the International Mohair Competition 19971. The patterns have been available, on our website, for a long time but are new to Ravelry. They are available as separate patterns and in an ebook.
As you can see from the photos of the multi-coloured cape, it lies completely flat when spread out. It is also possible to make it ‘more than a circle’, like the darker version shown.
You can make all parts of the outfit in any yarn though they are best in something that drapes well. The multi-coloured cape was made in a mohair and silk mixture (the dark stripes are the result of the natural pooling of the yarn); the darker skirt was made in chenille.
It is not possible to say how much yarn will be needed as the yarn and length are personal choices. There is information about how to assess the amount based on making a tension square in your chosen yarn.
This could be a good idea to use up odd balls of yarn, to create your own stripes. Because it is worked flat, in one piece, the colours will be distributed around. It would also work well as a bed-jacket using oddments of fine pastel yarns.
The ebook is mainly a book about the mathematics of knitting centre-out circles. Amongst other things, it explains how to make a circle that will lie completely flat whatever stitch, yarn and needles you decide to use. It includes all three patterns.
