With its wide center panel, Silverleaf is similar to Faroese shawls. But unlike traditional Faroese shawls—which involve casting on hundreds of stitches and working from the bottom up—Silverleaf is worked top-down, beginning with just a few stitches.

The pattern includes instructions for a laceweight version in two sizes, finished with a clean, smooth edge. There’s also a fingering weight version, which ends with a picot bind-off.

--510 (640) yds/466 (585) m laceweight yarn. Sample was knit with Woolen Rabbit Chantilly with Stellina 80% merino wool, 15% silk, 5% Stellina; 850yd/777m per 4oz/100g skein; colorway: Windflower.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY

Silverleaf was originally designed for the Woolen Rabbit 2014 Yarn Club, which had the theme “Once Upon a Time.” It was inspired by the Grimm’s fairy tale, “The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” also known as “The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces.” Each night, twelve princesses sneak away through a secret underground passage to go dancing. They pass through three groves of trees, first with leaves of silver, then of gold, then of diamonds. Twelve princes wait for them in twelve boats on a lake and row the princesses across to a brightly lit castle, where they dance until they wear out their shoes. They return home each morning, get in bed, and pretend to have slept all night. The shawl’s center leaf lace panel represents the trees, and the bands of lace on each side suggest rippling water.
