This is a very basic and well-fitting cap. In Scandinavian countries, the short row cap was taught in primary school. As you can imagine, there are many, many versions of short row hats available. Earth Heart Designs has a wonderful version – Sideways Garter Stitch Hat with Dahlia – that includes floral embellishments and edge variations. Elsebeth Lavold has a rather sophisticated three color version in her book, The Small Things Matter.

This version has eight wedge shaped sections. The wedge is created by knitting back and forth and incorporating a series of short rows near the crown of the cap. You can change the size of the wedge to change the size of the hat, making this a quite versatile design.

These directions are sized for an infant. However, after the directions I have included a section for making calculations for a cap in whatever size you choose. The italicized example in the calculations is for a medium woman’s cap made with Cascade 220.
