This is a slouchy beret, knitted in the round and worked in one piece from the bottom up. After casting on using a long tail tubular cast on method for 1x1 rib, the ribbed brim is worked before commencing onto a fairisle section to knit the trellis pattern. This is then followed by the crown shaping of the beret and an I-cord finish.

Instructions for this beret are provided in both written and charted format.

The trellis motif on this beret was inspired by the work of Scottish architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow in 1868 and through the development of his own style he designed some of the most beautiful buildings Glasgow has to offer, which include The Glasgow School of Art, Mrs Cranston’s Tea Rooms, Scotland Street School and Queen’s Cross Church.
He was well known for his Japanese-inspired forms and it is from these that I have taken my inspiration for the design on this beret. I was also encouraged by The Yarn Cake in Glasgow and their knitwear design competition, The Glasgow School of Yarn!
