“Toddler sweater with easy rib and easy seamless version or challenging steeked version. Fingering-weight yarn.”

Yarn Requirements: fingering-weight yarn, approx 575 (625) yds for long sleeves or 500 (550) yds for short sleeves (samples use 1 skein Malabrigo Sock for short-sleeve version and 2 skeins Noro Silk Garden Sock for long-sleeve version).

Designer notes:
Engineered to make the most of self-striping sock yarn with a very long repeat. In Japanese shima jima (島々) most often means “islands.” This sweater’s blurry bands of color stack seamlessly from hem to neck and extend across midriff to sleeves. Independent yet interrelated like a chain of islands, they inspired my invented homophone shima jima (縞々), meaning “stripes and stripes.”
