What a fun knit! Instead of “connect as you go,” this mitered square scarf is done as piecework which basically means all squares are knit separately. It is very portable and addicting to knit.

The colors and combinations are designed to create two groups of twelve mitered squares (24). By having a solid square within a mitered square, the layout of individual squares can be arranged (and rearranged) in a number of directions prior to assembling. When assembling the mitered squares, both techniques, a mattress stitch and a modified three needle bind off (two needles and a finished edge) are used.

Two eyelet rows in each square give the squares interest and an airiness. A DK natural fiber yarn was used to create warmth while the eyelet areas combined with a US size 8 needle gives the scarf a little drape.

A US size 7 needle makes a neat, uniform I-cord around all sides to give the scarf a clean edge.

Four colors of yarn were used to make a scarf approximately 10” x 62”.
Turquoise, Mustard, and Blue used approximately 156 yards each.
Gray yarn used approximately 227 yards.
Recommended: 3 skeins of 200 yards
1 skein of 225 yards

Another option for yarn are those wonderful, “What can I do with these little left over balls of pretty yarn?” that are left in your stash. Just like a patchwork quilt made of scraps, some of the combinations become unexpectedly beautiful.

With some imagination, this pattern can be lengthened and widened easily for versatility.
