October. A glorious month in New England—great weather, Fall foliage, pumpkins. The harvest season is drawing to a close, and even though there are still Asters and other wildflowers blooming before the frost comes, plants are slowing down, and seeds fall to the ground to sleep for winter and prepare for Spring. And so, the Celts celebrated this time with the festival of Samhain, which heralds the Celtic new year on October 31. While today we associate the word Fall with the falling of leaves from the trees, the idea of seeds falling is romantic to me. Seeds have been growing all season along with their host plants, be it flower, fruit, or grass. Now is their time to do the work to prepare for the next growing season. Like September’s sock design, I went back to Aran cable basics with a simple intertwined cable flanked by a single mini honeycomb to represent seeds falling alongside of it. The two motifs have a pleasing rhythm and proportion and are very easy and fast to knit. The orange heather of the Exmoor Sock Quick Beam is the icing on this pumpkin spice sock.
