Sea Fans is a crescent shaped shawl, with garter stitch, sea fan lace and lace waves spreading out to a generous wingspan, with a gently undulating border generated by the lace sections and picot border.

The sections of garter stitch make for a relaxing knitting experience, as do the lacy waves. An adventurous beginner will find the lace stitches easy to memorize, but will keep seasoned knitters interested.

The waves are a reminder of the currents and clear waters found in the Florida Keys, with a rainbow of brightly colored fish, seahorses, starfish and other inhabitants that thrive in the warm tropical waters teeming with diversity found in only a few other places. The sea fans gently sway in the currents doing their eternal dance of survival.

Yarn Used in the Sample:
Beach Bum Yarn Santa Cruz Sock (75% Superwash Merino / 25% Nylon, 463 yds / 423 m, 3.5 oz / 100g skein); fingering weight.
The sample used the colors Key Largo Bungalow and Fanta Orange.

Yardage:
C1: Key Largo Bungalow; 426-505 yds / 389.5-463.5m
C2: Fanta Orange; 380-440 yds / 347.5-406m

Needles:
US 5 (3.75mm) circular, 50” (125cm)

Gauge:
20 sts and 40 rows = 4” / 10cm for Garter Stitch (swatch worked on US 5 needles after blocking).
20 st and 32 rows = 4” / 10cm for Stockinette Stitch –for reference (swatch worked on US 5 needles after blocking).

Size:
One size only, can be adjusted to suit personal sizing preferences by adding or subtracting repeats.

Special Techniques:
Increases using kfb, yo and (k1, yo, k1) in 1 stitch
Decreases using k2tog and sskI

Final Measurements:
Inside wingspan of shawl: 92.5”/ 235cm after blocking
Depth of shawl: 26” / 66 cm after blocking
