I designed this pillow with side gussets reminiscent of the calf gussets of gorgeous traditional Austrian/Bavarian stockings. It is named Schatteneis—German for Shadow Ice—for the cracking sidewalk ice in early spring when the ground has thawed it from beneath. In the twisted/traveling stitch technique, worked in the round, every knit stitch is twisted on every row, and every purl stitch is untwisted. Here, the knitter has a few rounds to get the hang of twisting the knits before the crossing/traveling dances kick off. For working the twisted/traveling stitches, see the accompanying article.
