I wanted to design a small scarf, more of a neckerchief really using just one ball of Shetland yarn. I have many single balls kicking around the house, usually left over from other projects so I thought that this would be a great use for them.

This design is named after a sea rock called the Scarf Stane. Stane in Shetland dialect is a stone or a rock and just to confuse people scarf in Shetland dialect does not refer to the item which you wear around your neck but a sea bird, a cormorant.
It translates to Cormorant Rock. It was maybe a place where cormorants were seen sitting, drying their wings.

A scarf is known in Shetland as a gravit.
