Small items using surface crochet Dragon Curves.

A Dragon Curve is a space-filling curve based on what happens when you fold a long strip of paper in half, half again, half again, etc. In real life you can only do this about 6 times but you can do it theoretically as many times as you want. The folds can be represented in drawings, and in crochet.

Dragon Curves fit together in three different ways:

• Head-to-head
• Tail-to-tail
• Head-to-tail

All will completely cover a surface. Although they may look alike at first glance, the three rugs shown in the photos are all different. Each uses the same dragons but they are arranged differently.

This pattern booklet has a very brief introduction to the mathematics of Dragon Curves and will give you lots of ideas for making them. All are worked on a grid. You can crochet the grid yourself or use a ready-made grid such as rug canvass, mesh fabric or anything else with holes in a square pattern.

• cushion

The black scarf with a line of dragons is not included but would be very easy to make from the information given.
