I live just a few miles from the small town of Sanquhar, in the south of Scotland. I have found the patterns very interesting, especially as my favourite colours are black, white & red. Because of this, I have been doing a lot of research into the patterns and history. This scarf takes the most traditional patterns of the Sanquhar design and importantly, information on knitting in the traditional way….this is different from Fair Isle knitting.

Traditionally the colours were black and white with a pop of red colour for the lining. Using any colour, especially highly contrasting will give the same effect.

During the 1700’s to 1800’s household women knitted gloves and stockings in these patterns to help supplement household incomes.

This scarf pattern shows off the patterns in this very easy to read 18 page booklet.

The scarf is knitted in the round using a smaller needle that would normally be required in order to give the traditional look of the patterns. Because it is a scarf, there are no complex increases, decreases, fingers or gussets required, like there would be making the traditional Sanquhar Gloves.
