Sailors' Society Neck Warmer
This neck warmer consists of front and back bibs in garter stitch on a ribbed neck tube.
Sailors are not allowed to wear scarves because the ends might catch in machinery but a neck warmer will provide the same protection from the weather without the loose ends.
The society distributes the neck warmers as well as woolly hats as gifts to merchant seamen as part of a small Christmas present to show appreciation of the work they do bringing goods across the world in hazardous conditions for our use.
They can be knitted in any suitable yarn to a size that will fit an adult man.
The society suggests a contribution of £5 for a leaflet (2015) containing four patterns, the neck warmer, a woolly hat, a balaclava and mittens. The contribution goes to support the society’s work. Contact the society at its website to apply for the leaflet.
