The SAGA Afghan is a square motif blanket inspired by mosaic tiles. The SAGA afghan comes in two versions, the original SAGA square and the baby version, that has little hearts in the corners!
Each square is crocheted in the round from the center and outward, using the mosaic crochet technique. Once joined, the squares form another motif on the corners!
You can use any yarn you like. You will need at least 2 colors and a crochet hook that suits your yarn.
For the original Saga square, I’m using 100% Merino from Katia, DK weight, and hook no. 4 mm.
You get 8 squares per skein when using the main color and 12 squares per skein using the pattern color, each square is approx. 10x10 cm large.
For the baby blanket I used Gilitrutt Tvíband, a lovely Icelandic lambswool in 2 plied lace weight (that comes in gorgeous colors!), and hook 2.5 mm.
In the Gilitrutt yarn, you get 15 squares per skein using the main color and 25 squares per skein using the pattern color. In this yarn each square only weighs 2,5 grams!
For an 80 squares baby blanket, like the one I did, you will need
7 skeins of main color, including the border, and 4 skeins of pattern colors.
Size
The size of the squares will vary depending on the hook and yarn you use. My original Saga squares are approx. 10 x 10 cm, and my baby squares are approx. 7 x 7 cm.
For my Baby SAGA blanket I did 10 x 8 squares and it’s 60 cm (23.5 inches) long and 48 cm (19 inches) wide. The border then adds 2,5 cm (1 inch) on each side.
