We have been looking recently at national emblems and symbols and flags seemed a natural extension of our original work.

The Royal Standard of Scotland is also known as The Banner of the King of Scots and Lion Rampant of Scotland. It is a well-known symbol of Scotland. The flag is flown on royal residences and is also used by representatives of the sovereign.

The lion is always present though the borders and symbols can vary. The only stipulation seems to be that there should be a double red border and that the floral symbols should be in opposing pairs.

This flag is the same size as our Saltire Illusion at approximately 32 inches wide by 20 inches high when using DK yarn and 3.25mm needles. It is designed to be viewed from the side as a wall hanging or as the centre piece of a bed cover. It can be made in any yarn though this might change the overall size.

The last photo shows what you see when you look straight at the illusion.

This pattern also includes our Heraldic Lion illusion knit.

September 2013 Update
The pattern now includes an extra chart intended for tablet users but others may find it helpful. You can view 20 ridges at a time and always be able to see the numbers across the bottom of the chart. Never lose your place again!
