This is a convertible thing and a “stashbuster”--1 or 2 skeins, keep going ‘til you run out of yarn. (1 ball of Katrina is 100g). Use any weight of yarn and appropriate hook as long as you make a rectangle the same width as pattern states (or wider for the amply-blessed upper arms--see pattern).
Lace it up at the sides to make it a one-size-fits-most shrug, or left unlaced it’s a scarf.
The stitch pattern is unusual and in a stretchy yarn, the picots remind me of rosebuds.

3/3/11: I see from recent comments over at Crochetme that people are having trouble with the pattern! Here is my response:

Hi there, I have not checked this page for awhile and I see that:

  • some photos are not showing up
  • edits in a second color are not showing
  • people have recently been trying to make this and having serious problems with the pattern!

First of all, I’m sorry that this design has been a frustrating experience for some folks. Some, maybe all, of the errors and other unnecessary difficulties are beyond my control. As you can see from an early comment (below), errors were introduced into the pattern during the uploading process, after it left my hands. Back in 2006, these errors were quickly fixed.

However, a few years later this pattern got transferred to its current home at this Interweave site. I can’t tell if the fixed version is the one that got transferred. (I will have to check back later, when I have time, to be able to see if this is the corrected version of the pattern, or not. After all, my name is associated with this pattern, whether or not it contains my errors.)

OK, that said, I can tell you that this is one of the more confusing stitch patterns in crochet when written as text--even if the pattern is written with no errors. It’s one of those things in crochet that is easier to learn from someone in person, or from a visual aid: video, a step-by-step photo tutorial, or at least a stitch diagram.

I’ve been planning on writing a new edition of this Rosebud Shrug, now that I have my own crochet pattern site here and in Ravelry (username vashtirama). I announce all new patterns in my newsletter, so you might want to subscribe (it’s free). I’ll be mentioning the Rosebud Shrug today in issue #13 of my Crochet Inspirations Newsletter.
