Rose Tendrils
by Joy Gerhardt
These socks were inspired by the Art Nouveau graphic design and paintings of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There is a strong vertical element in much of Mackintosh’s work, but the lines are never quite straight. This was an intriguing challenge to translate into knitting, which is made up entirely of straight rows and columns.
These toe-up socks feature a gusset and heel flap construction. The instep is decorated with leaves, vines and buds made up of knits, purls, and increases and decreases (not cables!). Ktbl stitches around the gusset culminate with a Mackintosh Rose on either side of the ankle.
