With a textured lace motif and a smooth spiral of half double crochet, this cowl is long enough to bunch around your neck, or be pulled up to cover your ears on a chilly walk.

Yarn: 560 yards (512m) of Fingering Weight Yarn. Shown in Apple Tree Knits Plush Fingering (100% Superwash Merino Wool), 560 yds per 100g) in Yarnover Truck Gradient.
Finished Size: 28 inches (71cm) circumference, 17 inches (43cm) tall.
Gauge: 1 fan repeat wide (16 sts) x 2 repeats tall (8 rows) = 3 inches (7.5cm) in after blocking.
Hook: 4mm (US6) hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
Notions: tapestry needle for weaving in ends, pin-style stitch markers, pins for blocking.
Techniques Used: single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, chains working into stitches and chain spaces, slip stitches, puff stitch, working into front and back loops only, and foundation double crochet (with video tutorial).

The beginning of each round moves over 4 stitches to keep the hdc section rotating around the cowl. The slip stitches that shift the BOR are worked through the back loop only. As you finish the round, you will need to work the hdcs into the front loop only of the same stitches into which you worked the slipped stitches at the beginning of the round.

If you would like a wider or narrower cowl, you can add a repeat of 16 fdc to the Foundation Row. Each repeat will add or remove 3 inches (7.5cm) from the circumference. Be aware that any changes to the # of stitches will change the yardage requirements or the length that you can reach with the yarn you have.
