Two years ago, a group of very ambitious women in my hometown decided to form a roller derby team. Since I grew up in the rink and love roller skating, I eagerly joined, imagining all the adorable and sassy things I would knit to wear during bouts. For about two months, I endured the battering and bruising that comes along with roller derby training, until I realized that being a roller girl meant living with the constant and likely danger of serious injuries to my wrists and fingers. Also, it turned out I wasn’t nearly as tough or talented a skater as I was in my own head. In fact, I’m a bit of a train wreck on wheels. So I gave it up for the sake of my knitting career, but continue to live in complete admiration of these incredibly cool, tough, and athletic women. With that in mind, I’m dedicating these roller booties to the roller girls of the future.
