The gauge swatch is knit in Simple Brioche and not in the scarf’s stitch pattern. The latter contains increase and decrease stitches, which some knitters might have difficulty measuring in a swatch. Knitting Simple Brioche will help you determine if your chosen needle size creates a desirable fabric.

The pattern uses a Two Color Italian cast on and bind off. If you don’t wish to use these techniques, you can cast on over two needles with the dark color and bind off loosely with the dark color instead. Keep in mind, though, that the edges will look different from the ones in the sample.
