River Rock Mosaic Colorwork Shawl
✨ The Story Behind Your Next Knit
Imagine cool water flowing over smooth river rocks and sunlight dappling through leaves in shades of gold, brown, and blue. The River Rock Shawl captures this peaceful scene in shifting blocks of six different colors and mosaic colorwork. With its unique pointed edge and versatile rectangular shape, this shawl is perfect for stash-busting and can be made completely unique through endless color combinations! It’s pure creative bliss.
🧶 Quick Highlights:
- Difficulty: Intermediate (perfect for expanding your colorwork skills with a calming mosaic flow!).
- Techniques: Knit, purl, mosaic colorwork (slipped stitches), changing needle size mid-pattern.
- Construction: Worked flat, creating a versatile rectangular shawl with a unique pointed edge.
- Special Features: Six-color design, adaptable rectangular shape, mosaic colorwork, stash-busting friendly, charted and written instructions for colorwork.
- Yarn Weight: Sport weight.
📐 Approximate Measurements:
- Length: 57” (145 cm)
- Depth: 12” (30 cm)
- Tip: Exact gauge is not critical, but a significant difference will affect the final size and yarn requirements. Swatch it up, friend! 😉
🧶 Suggested Yarn:
- Recommended Yarn: Laurel Falls in Mojave Flora Gradient Set by Miss Babs Yarn; 100% superwash Shaniko Merino wool; this gradient set contains six 150 yd (1.7 oz (137 m / 50 g) skeins. Sport Weight.
- Or approximately 300 g of a similar sport weight yarn - this is a perfect project for scraps or mini skeins! Choose solid or mostly solid colored yarn that has good stitch definition and select colors that have enough contrast to allow the colorwork to stand out.
🥢 Needles:
- US 6 (4.0 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge at least 24” (60 cm) long.
✂️ Notions:
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in those gorgeous color changes!)
- Stitch markers (12, for keeping track of your rows and repeats)
- Kitchen scale (because precision means perfect gradients! 🤓)
📏 Gauge:
- 25 sts / 48 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Mosaic Colorwork using larger needles (US 7 (4.5 mm)) after a light blocking
- Exact gauge is not critical. However, the shawl requires nearly the entire skein of each color, deviation from the gauge will affect the size of the shawl and yarn requirements.
