Riita Scarf
First Frost Cozy Folk Knitting is available in print and eBook.
Riita is an ideal project with which you can explore the distinctively beautiful and textural Estonian nupp. In Estonian museum collections, there are many stunning and superb examples of large, finely knitted Estonian lace shawls that show off the use of the Estonian nupp wonderfully. The majority of these shawls would have been knitted in the coastal town of Haapsalu, where there was a tradition to knit fine lace. Often liberally incorporated into elaborate openwork lace patterns, nupps are quintessentially Estonian knitted bobbles and are made by wrapping the yarn around the needle either five, seven, or nine times depending on the required size and type of yarn used.
The Riita Scarf is knitted backward and forward with two needles in a fine laceweight yarn, and the nupps are made with nine wraps of the yarn. On completion, the scarf is washed in warm soapy water and left to dry flat, but not pinned or stretched.
