Rib and Divot
RIB AND DIVOT COWL
Worked in the round (bottom up and top down are the same).
Established Beginner Skills: Work in the round, longtail CO, knit, purl, pick up and knit 1 stitch.
Simple and visually interesting on both RS and WS.
Omission of ribs in select placements creates a divot effect causing the ribs to appear to lean on the RS, and the WS to appear as woven over/under horizontal bands on wide vertical slats.
Please note the item is not shaped. The ribbing is very stretchy with negative ease which allows it to form fit your upper chest and yet still stand up at the neck.
The pattern has both written line by line (abbreviated) instructions and a chart. It is written in US English with metric equivalents provided.
There is also it’s sibling pattern Good Impressions in a much looser gauge and with taller divots in 2 offset mirrored tiers (as opposed to 3 here).
YARN
300 y (275 m) Total of Light Worsted Weight Yarn
Sample Yarn

Sample Usage 1.25 Hanks, 263 y (275 m) 125 g
NEEDLES AND NOTIONS
US 4 or 5 (3.5 or 3.75 mm) Needles - Or size that gets gauge/desired fabric.
Row Counter
Stitch Markers (11 plus 1 different)
Tapestry Needle
MEASUREMENTS
9.25” (23.5 cm) Tall by 21.5” (55 cm) Circumference
GAUGE
Gauge is not critical, but will affect size and yarn requirements.
Sample Gauge
Lightly Blocked 4 by 4 Rib & Divot Stitch
33 sts by 32 rounds = 4” (10 cm) Square
Lightly Blocked Stockinette Stitch
22 stitches by 32 rounds = 4” (10 cm) Square
This gauge provided for yarn and needle pairing and for usage considerations.
It is difficult to get an accurate measurement in pattern due to the depth of texture.
Fabric to your liking is more important than exact gauge,
Please also see Care Note below.
Circumference Modification Note
Repeat multiple is 16.
To adjust circumference, add or subtract multiples of 16 at CO.
Notes on Texture, Gauge, and Care
Tight fabric is key to maintain the texture dimension. My sample is worked on US 5 (3.5 mm) needles – I knit tightly, if you do not, please start with a US 4 (3.75 mm).
Keep in mind, dimensions and texture will change after wetting! Please treat your swatch as you will your finished piece, to decide on the fabric you like. While the texture is best retained with no blocking and dry cleaning, I soaked and dried the sample scrunched up along the ribs (see image in Finishing).
