Rhubarb Stalk
Rhubarb Stalk is a classic pair of socks with a clean and modern design, making it perfect for a woman or a man. An Elongated Herringbone stitch runs down the front of both feet like the stalk of a rhubarb plant and elevates it beyond basic stockinette sock status. The leaves of the rhubarb plant are toxic but the stalk is tart and subtly sweet which lends its flavor well to many desserts and cocktails. Carry a bit of that rhubarb love with you into the winter, long after the growing season is passed with these socks.
PATTERN NOTES
S (M, L) to fit 8”-9” (9”-10”, 10”-11”) / 20 - 23 (23 - 25.5, 25.5 - 28) foot circumference including 1-2” (2.5 - 5 cm) of negative ease for a snug fit
Techniques used in this pattern: long tail cast on, working in the round, knit, purl, cables, wraps, picking up stitches, decreases, grafting/Kitchener stitch.
Sample knit is a size Large to fit a women’s US 12 or men’s US 10.5. One 100gm skein of a typical sock yarn should be more than enough for most sizes
Sizing is based on foot circumference and knit to the desired length. Foot length suggestions based on sizing are included in the pattern.
Pattern directions work with both the magic loop method and DPNs. Simply divide stitches evenly over needles for the preferred method.
This is a top-down pattern that features a traditional gusset heel but you can easily modify the pattern to work an alternate heel (such as an afterthought or fish lips kiss heel.)
If you find your heel flap is too long, simply work to the desired length and pick up half the number of rows plus one extra between gusset and top of foot. Decrease as explained in the pattern until you have the same number of sts as when you cast on.
Unfortunately, “Forager’s Harvest” was an exclusive colorway, dyed specifically for KnitCrate by Chasing Rabbits Fiber Co. But this design works great with any indie dyed fingering weight, especially heavily variegated ones! Chasing Rabbits Fiber offers a ton of other great colorways on their Fern base that I highly recommend checking out for this project!
