These are the Five Laws of Library Science, proposed in 1931 by S. R. Ranganathan, an Indian mathematician and librarian who is considered one of the founders of modern library and information science. His “laws” focus on creating libraries that serve patrons, rather than staff or administrators, and have acted as a cornerstone of library
science ever since. Ranganathan’s birthday is still observed in India every August 9 as National Library Day.

Sharon Fuller designed these mitts as a reminder of what—and whom—libraries are for. Wearing a law on the back of each hand, a librarian can proclaim her (or his) fealty to the profession while keeping hands warm for typing or shelving books.
