Rambling Rose
Laura Zukaite uses two shades of rose to accentuate the fitted lines of this unusual cardigan. Leaf motifs line the center-front edges, and a deep border of layered scallops, worked in intarsia, edges the body and the sleeves. The yoke is seamless; after the fronts, back, and sleeves are knitted, they’re joined and the entire yoke is worked back and forth on a circular needle.
Finished Size: 30 (43)“ bust circumference
Yarn: Koigu Kersti Merino Crepe (100% merino; 114 yd 104 m/50 g): #1170 rose (MC, light), 5 (6) skeins; #1120 raspberry (CC, dark), 6 (9) skeins.
Needles: Size 6 (4 mm): 24” circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Markers (m); cable needle (cn); seven 3/4” buttons (shown: #SPN10628 from One World Button Supply, www.oneworldbuttons.com)
Gauge: 1 rep of scallop rib patt (st count of rep varies 16-24 sts) measures about 3.75” at widest point after blocking; entire leaf panel from chart (st count varies 36- 44 sts) measures about 9” wide after blocking; section from leaf panel chart for sleeves (st count varies 5-9 sts) measures 1.75” wide after blocking.
Notes from Interweave Knits, Winter 2006:
- “For ‘chain’ selvedge stitches, slip the first stitch of every row as if to knit, and purl the last stitch.”
- “Each vertical color panel is worked using a separate bobbin or butterfly of yarn, intarsia-style. Cross the MC and CC yarns at each color change to prevent holes between the colors.”
- “Work stitches from charts using colors as shown.”
- “When you purl across the tops of the scallop shells using the contrast color, dots of the main color will show on the right side of the work as a deliberate design feature. If you prefer not to have these dots at the color change, on the first right-side row after the scalloped rib pattern knit the main color stitches using the contrast color, then continue in reverse stockinette with the contrast color.”
Pattern is in two sizes: 30” or 43” bust. 30” requires 5 skeins of MC and 6 of CC, 43” requires 6 skeins of MC and 9 of CC.
