Rain Falls is an asymmetrical triangle shawl filled with texture and color, knit using two-color brioche, two-color garter, two-color seed stitch, and marled garter stitch for a heavy border.

This shawl pattern is written out exactly as I knit it, but the color choices and changes are completely up to you! Included with the pattern is the simple color blending formula I used. When I started this shawl, Hurricane Harvey was on its way to South Texas, where I live. I was having a difficult time focusing on my work because I just wanted to keep my family safe. But I also needed a little bit of a distraction before the power went out. So I grabbed all of my favorite balls of fingering weight yarn that were left over from different projects and designs, and just cast on! I didn’t want to count stitches or pay too much attention to what I was doing.

Skill Level: Beginner friendly! This is a fantastic pattern if you are new to brioche knitting. Techniques used: knit, purl, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), simple brioche increases and decreases.

Construction Notes: This asymmetrical triangle shawl is knit on the bias from tip to edge. The shawl begins at the cast on tip with two-color brioche and gradually gets larger. After the brioche comes relaxing two-color garter stitch (I needed a little brioche break), and just when you’re ready to start something new, in comes two-color seed stitch! The texture is absolutely amazing and is a great way to blend colors together. For the border, I wanted to completely change the gauge of the shawl. I was also ready for some plain old garter stitch. So, for the last part of the shawl, you will be marling your yarns together. This pattern is easy to modify by adding or omitting pattern repeats in each Section!

One size: 85” / 216cm wingspan and 32” / 81cm at widest point, measured after blocking. Schematic included in pattern, which can also be used as a blank slate to color in and play!

Notes about choosing yarn: If you want to have some rhyme or reason to your shawl, choose one color scheme for the Main Side, and one for the Contrast Side! Then divide up your yarns accordingly, Main Colors and Contrast Colors, so you can just grab the next one when you run out. Or just go with the flow and grab whatever inspires you! If you would like to use 2 colors for your shawl (1 Main Color and 1 Contrast Color), simply divide the yardage in half. I based my color scheme on what the sky looks like when a storm is on the way.

Needles: 32” / 81cm or longer US 5 / 3.75mm circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. Circular needles are used to accommodate large number of stitches and for two-color brioche, garter, and seed knitting.

Tools: tapestry needle for weaving ends, row counter

Gauge: 24 sts x 40 rows = 4” / 10cm; measured in two-color garter stitch (taken after blocking). Swatch pattern included.
